Week 6

Another awesome week! (alliteration:) Great discussions were had and some deep topics were grazed. I would like to let all the parents know, we had a good talk on time management. This is an issue I believe all Challenge A kids have to deal with. It is a difficult life skill for us moms sometimes too :) Some wonderful ideas were thrown about and encouragement reigned.

Would anyone like to pick up snack for next week??
Next week is pancake breakfast. Please see separate email.
The 23rd is skiing at Sugar for $20!! You cannot beat that price. See separate email as well.

Rhetoric: We finished up It Just Couldn't Happen this week with some very deep conversation about not everyone making it to heaven. I highly encourage you to continue this talk with your child at home. It can be overwhelming to understand that there really is a hell that people will go to.
Homework: Know your cat questions!! Read chapters 21 - 23 in Don't Check Your Brains

Literature: Great papers! We discussed the writing process and how an outline can help give you more words or reign them in. I also let them know that if they feel led to write a paper in a different direction then what the guide suggests, I am alright with them doing that. There were some questions on the conclusion. A conclusion will: Repeat the main idea, remind the reader of the topic discussed, it might discuss the most significant and why, and then a final clincher. The final clincher in these essay will be the opinion of the writer expressed without using the word "I".
Homework: Read Amos Fortune. Keep your writing topic in mind.

Science: We took our quiz on the mouth. I checked everyones work on the brain. Then the students got a little more then they bargained for :) Our science experiment for the heart involved testing our aerobic capacity. Ms. Bonnie is also a personal trainer and happens to know quite a bit on how to take care of our heart. So that is where our discussions in science went to today.
Homework: Draw and label heart in sketch notebook. There will be a brain quiz next week.

Geography: It's done!!! Asia is done!
Homework: Start in on Africa, which will seem like a dream after Asia :) I gave the kids maps to take home of the world. I want them to fill in what they can to review. THese are small maps so hit the highlights. Bring them back next week. I really want them to start spending some time in review. These maps will be bigger later on.

Latin: This was one of those weeks with Latin I could have really used two hours. I started to introduce the 3rd Declension....and then I realized I had the wrong sheet (love those moments). We reviewed declension and all declension endings and started to decline again. We discuissed the classical model and how it works. How even though they are more in that dialetic stage, there is still grammar be learned.
Homework: Work on vocabulary up to this point. Focus on whether masculine or feminine. Know your 1st and 2nd declension endings and 1st, 2nd, 3rd Conjugations endings. I am going to hold off one week on our quiz.I am in the process of putting together a better "cheat" sheet to study from :)
Workbook pages up 90...BUT I would rather the focus be on these endings and getting familiar with the 3rd declension on pages 189 - 191. We can catch up on workbook pages next week.

Week 5

It was nice to have a change of venue (sorry Ms. Lawrence had to be sick to do so)

Items of business:
-I will take on snack next week
-The girls had talked about making next week a big hair day:)
-February 22 is Pancake Breakfast/PJ Day for Challenge A and B, plan to come in early for food and fellowship (siblings welcome!)
-February 23rd the kids and I are going skiing up at Sugar, any one who would like to join..COME ON DOWN :) If your child would like a ride, I have 4 empty seats.

Algebra:
This week in Algebra we are only working on 2 lessons. I want students to work on the grammar of Domain and Range and truly understand slope/intercept before we move any further.
Homework: Students will have done up to lesson 82

Rhetoric:
We all agreed that Winter Jamz was awesome this year and had some great discussion on what we know from the bible and what is theory. I would love to encourage you to continue this conversation and at home!
Homework: Read Chapter 20 both books. DO NOT FORGET CAT QUESTIONS!!

Science:
Everyone took the lung "test". We reviewed the mouth, and introduced the brain. There was a nice little brain handout the children may wish to use this week. We also did an experiment concerning nerves and the brain.
Homework: Draw brain in notebook and label. Study for Mouth and glands test next week!

Literature:
Excellent discussion once again on Number the Stars!I handed out possible outlines they could use, as well as last weeks essays. We discussed that the 100 words does not need to be dogmatic as much as a guideline for length.
Homework: Write an essay on whether you agree or disagree with Uncle Henrick's definition of bravery. You may use "i" if sharing a story about yourself. You may not use "i" if expressing an opinion :)

Geography: We spent a bit of extra time on Geography this week. We had a special guest today..THANK YOU HANNAH! Our guest had been to China and shared with us what her journey was like. We also practiced drawing Asia from scratch.
Homework: Due to so many being hit with sickness and well life... I am giving the option next week of drawing Asia from scratch or labeling an outlined map. The call is MOM's TO MAKE :) Not the student. Do not forget to review Geography Terms for Asia "test" next week :)

Latin: We did not have as much time for Latin due to our special Geography guest, but not to worry.
Homework: Using the pages I handed out last week, fill in 3rd declension endings using the chart on page 189 and pages 80 and 81. Work up to page 82 in your workbook. Study your Conjugation/Declension Endings. Next week we will be conjugating and declining vocabulary words together. So study your vocabulary words! Take this week to really firm up the "grammar" of Latin because next week we will put it all together and begin to parse again :)(What do I mean by grammar? Have your charts memorized as best you can, know your vocabulary....it all comes together next week :)

Week 4

Another fine, fine week full of God's blessings!

Berkeley has offered to provide snacks next week :)

Next week, if children wish to exchange Valentines they are welcome. We talked about this being the age they may or may not wish to participate..TOTALLY OPTIONAL. If everyone wants to wear something red or pink....there's the theme :)

Algebra: Great Day! WE went over the next four lessons. I emphasized to a couple students, if you need me I am available in Kernersville between 2pm and 3pm on Fridays and as always, please feel free to call or email me with any problems. We can work on them together and then they do not seem as intimidating :) (See email with Example problem worked)
Homework: Up to lesson #80. Please remember to test and check work. This is how we know you are retaining the information :)

Rhetoric: Conversation took another turn today, but is was AWESOME!  We really delved into what the world throws at us constantly and world view versus God's view and how important it is to surround ourselves with friends that lift us up and not down.  I very much encourage you to continue this conversation with them and bring in your influence.  This is the age we want them to question everything so we can help them find logical answers and prepare them to arm themselves for battle.
Homework: Chapters 19 both books.  Review ALL catechism questions!  don't forget there is a link to the left on this page :)

Science: We discussed what Biology is.  We reviewed lungs and introduced the mouth teeth and gums.  Our science experiment went a tad better.
Homework: Draw and label mouth, teeth, and gums in science notebook.  We test on lungs next week.  Do bring your biology book to class.

Literature: I read everyone's papers and we tried to guess whose papers were whose.  For those that did not turn in a paper.  Either your mom emails me to let me know it's good OR you turn in your paper next Tuesday.
Homework: Read Number the Stars.  Consider what Uncle Henrik has to say on bravery.

Geography: We put together the following map below. Let's really work on refining that southwest.  We test in two weeks.  We did have a special guest from China talk to us for a little bit.  She did not speak much English but we were able to glean some interesting facts. We also had a Geography Term crossword, to which I received a lot of "Oh, we still have to study those?"....yes.
Homework: Fine tune Asia.  Really work on capitals and countries.  If you have those well, add some features. Do not forget to study geography terms.  Remember these do not need to be word for word.  But you do need to be able to read a definition and relate it to what it is. We are up to rapids.  Test on ASIA IN 2 WEEKS.

Latin: YEAH, we finally figured out how to make it an hour without exasperating the students :) PTL :)  We introduced "sum" and third conjugation endings.  We also reviewed vocabulary.
Homework: Please continue to work on the grammar flashcards on the blog post before this.  WE need to add our 3rd conjugation endings to that as well.  Work book pages are up to #70.  Review all vocabulary as well.  We will start getting back into parsing over the next few weeks.

**Praying for healthy and blessed weeks.  I have received two emails from swim lesson students who have told me they have the flu, so wash those hands, it's going around!

Week 3

Praise the Lord we could meet Tuesday!

First I would like to thank Addie for such a wonderful snack!  Hannah has volunteered for next week.

Look below for ski dates.  If you are going any of those dates, let me know and I will keep the group in the loop.

Algebra: Great Day! I think slop and intercept just might have sunk in.
Homework: Lessons 73 - 76 CHECK YOUR WORK!

Rhetoric: The day led itself to more serious discussion concerning deciding to have faith for yourself.  Not believing just because mom and dad believe, but having a relationship with Jesus that is their own.  You may wish to talk with them more on this topic:)
Homework: Chapters 18 in both books.  Adding Catechism questions up to54! (almost there)

Science:Excellent reports on whales and dolphins....well dolphins. It brought me great joy to know the the Narwhal actually is real!  I introduced the lungs and we tried our hand at a science experiment....that didn't go as planned.  The bottle we too soft.  T he children understand the procedure and what materials are needed, I encouraged them to give it another try at home.
Homework: Practice drawing and labeling the lung and respiratory system.  Use page 79 in our Biology Lab Book to guide us.  Learn about the respiratory system using other sources that they may already have as well.

Literature:  Great discussion on Narnia.  Thank you Jared for sharing a very insightful book!
Homework: Write an essay paper at least 5 paragraphs long.  (Opening, 3 topics, Closing)  Compare and contrast the creation of Narnia to God's creation of Earth.  Please make sure you take some time to read through Genesis chapter 1.....if not more :) You may use the outline I gave you to help. (If you need to, start reading Number the Stars)

Geography: Addie gave an awesome presentation on Korea!  The pictures were wonderful and the snack was tasty too.  Next week either Hannah has a friend that may present or Jordan's grandmother may present, both of these children are to contact me with this information :)
Homework:    Keep studying Asia.  Practice drawing it out and labeling.  Use the map I handed out in class to help with tracing.  Do not forget review or Geography Terms.  We are now up to plateau...that's a lot :)

Latin: We had fun with a Latin Scavenger Hunt!  They had to know the word to get their next clue.  It went so well, I promised to put a more complicated one together...so study that vocabulary.  Also, I will post a new link tomorrow or Friday with the grammar I asked for them to work on.
Homework: Up to page 66 in your book.  FINISH THOSE QUIZZES.  They are open book, and bring them back to class ;) We will go over them in class together.  I do not wish to move more into parsing into we have some of this grammar down.  It is a lot and after praying on it, decided to give them one more week to work on it.   So work on those rules for accents, macrons, and syllables, memorizing declensions endings and conjugation endings.

I do hope everyone has a healthy and happy week!  Many Blessings!!

Week 2 Take 2

Yeah, we made it to week 2! It was looking like we might not LOL

Thank you for all the well wishes on my trip.  I had a lovely time with my husband and whole family together for my daughter's birthday.  Looking forward to getting back into the swing of things this week.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the fudge from New Orleans this week.  Addie has volunteered for snack next week.

On skiing:  I was going to try to go on the 26th but that is not going to work out for me.  I do plan on going February 23rd.  (I may go the 9th, but probably not)  But here is the link for Sugar www.riderschoice.blogspot.com   if you wish to go on your own.  Also you will find dates for Appalachian Ski Mountain on that same page.  I may do them on Valentines Day.  If any of these dates interest you, let me know and maybe we can coordinate to go together.  Also, if you know you are going on another date, post it here and maybe someone else would like to go with you:)

As promised....the 5th grade Bonnie Pic from Hong Kong :)  Yes, I dug the 80's

And on to it:

Algebra 1:  We went through 5 lessons! Yes 5!  I gave them permission to do 3 lesson practices, 2 mixed practices on the condition that they take the time to memorize some of the grammar.
Homework: Up to lesson 72. Know substitution, elimination, and factoring trinomials.

Rhetoric: Another day of great discussion.  I encouraged them that catechism questions are almost done.
Homework:  Chapter 17 in both books. Add questions #49 - #51

Science:  I think we all agreed we do not wish to meet Jared's bat from the Philippines anytime soon :) Great reports!
Homework: Whales and Dolphins! They will need their Biology books starting next week.  We will start with the lungs.

Literature: Everyone kept saying what horrible papers they had and I thought quite the opposite!  Learning to write an essay with your own style of writing and incorporating an opinion without using the words I or we can be a challenging task.  For everyone's first time out I was impressed.  This is a skill we are introducing in A and will continue to cultivate.
Homework: Read Magician's Nephew with the essay topic in mind.  Take notes along the way if needed to remember parts that one may wish to use in their essay.

Geography: We reviewed everything we should be studying throughout  the week.  Testimony was shared on how it really only takes 15 minutes of review, 15 of new to do the job :)  Set a timer.  Time management is a huge skill.  Learn it now and you will carry it with you for a very long time!  I am in the process of looking for a better Asia map and will hopefully have one by next Tuesday.  I also shared about my trip to Hong Kong.  One of my CD's did not work :(  But they got to see some other pictures.
Homework: Don't forget about those GEOGRAPHY TERMS!!!  Continue to review 15 minutes a day and practice Asia 15 minutes a day. Next week Addie, will be doing a special presentation.

Latin: We introduced 2nd  Declension Neuter, 2nd Conjugation, and some new vocabulary.
Homework: Do and BRING BACK take home/open book quiz, pages 49 - 56, practice speaking (alphabet/diphthongs)  Next week oral quiz on the grammar of syllables, accents, macrons, and vocab review.

Week 1..part 2

What an awesome first day!! Well, I was thrilled anyway.  While the kids were not necessarily thrilled, I do believe they enjoyed being altogether again.  We enjoyed sharing a bit about our break, and how blessed we each were at Christmas time.

Two shout outs!  1-Thank you parents for timely payments today!!  My directors payment to CC is due right around the corner and I very much appreciate that. 2- These kids rock when it comes to cleaning up our room!! They got right to it and knocked it out without me having to say a word!!

Business Notes: If we have any lost days due to snow, I will send out an email as soon as I know and call everyone personally.  Usually, all the Westside directors will try to make the decision the night before (due to many driving long distances).

I will be sending out an email this week about ski dates.  My children and I have enjoyed many nearby slopes home school ski dates at wonderful rates.  This year I thought we would post the dates of when we were going and if anyone wants to join us, or would like a ride (We have 4 extra seats) they are welcome to.

Mark your calendars!  February 22nd  is Pancake Breakfast, YUMMM!!!!  I come early and flip some flapjacks for Challenge A and B.  We usually start eating around 8:30am.  One word....bacon!  More details to come.

And away we go!

Algebra: I believe today I became the world's most "loved" math tutor.  I explained the answer to why we study Algebra.  I also discussed the grammar of the math language and how we have reached the level where they just need to set aside time every day to just work on the grammar of math.  Set a timer if they need to. (Consider it Algebra Memory Master:)
Homework:  I am only having them do up to Lesson #67, make sure we understand the elimination method

Rhetoric:  Discussion today was amazing.  I was afraid with visitors coming in and out that it might disrupt the flow a bit, if anything, they seemed to shine even more.  We talked about how the end to Catechism questions is in sight and will give them time to play catch up if needed.
Homework: Chapter 16 in both books and questions up to 48

Science:  Great reports on marsupials!  I also let them in on the fact that we will be doing science experiments to go along with the anatomy we will be learning about.  There is an important decision to make....pig or shark!
Homework:  Report on bats

Literature: I do not even know which adjectives to choose to describe the conversation we had on Carry On Mr Bowditch today.  Everyone participated and everyone had fantastic contributions! I just kept thinking, this is how Leigh Bortins planned it to be :)  We talked a bit on how to structure our paper.  I gave them a few handouts that you may wish to go through with them at home.  It is to be in essay form.  It should contain an introductory paragraph, each paragraph is a detail, and a conclusion paragraph.  The checklist needs to be attached to their essay.  I realize that sometimes parents (especially when you are trying to proof 3 or more children's papers) may not always get a chance to proof.  On the checklist, just do not check those boxes.  The checklist is a guideline for how it should be on a week when it is flowing and all comes together.  (Not the week where you may be passing around flu)  The handouts I gave them today were to support good habits I hope to groom in them for their Challenge "career".  How to read a book for understanding, how to structure their writing, and the writing process itself are skills they begin this semester through the literature seminar and will continue to grow in Challenge B.  Oh, we also had a blast playing a new game I received for Christmas...Now What?
Homework: Contrast what Bowditch accomplished as a teen in school, work, and recreation with today's teens in those three areas.

Geography: I encouraged them to spend at least 15 minutes a day on review.  Maybe picking a different region each day.  We discussed the classical model as well and what it meant to study the grammar of a subject and why we study geography this way.  I also encouraged them again to bring in any presentations they would like.  I will be presenting on Hong Kong! (probably next week)
Homework: Review and start in on Asia.  Practice drawing countries and capitals.

Latin: We tied in the same conversation we had in geography concerning grammar.  This week introduces an enormous amount of grammar for Latin.  (Principal parts of verbs, macrons, syllables, and accents)  I encouraged them to take the time to memorize it now, then it's done.  It will make it so much easier.  The understanding will come.
Homework: Pages 39-48 in their LNST level 4 books.
