Week 3
Praise the Lord we could meet Tuesday!
First I would like to thank Addie for such a wonderful snack! Hannah has volunteered for next week.
Look below for ski dates. If you are going any of those dates, let me know and I will keep the group in the loop.
Algebra: Great Day! I think slop and intercept just might have sunk in.
Homework: Lessons 73 - 76 CHECK YOUR WORK!
Rhetoric: The day led itself to more serious discussion concerning deciding to have faith for yourself. Not believing just because mom and dad believe, but having a relationship with Jesus that is their own. You may wish to talk with them more on this topic:)
Homework: Chapters 18 in both books. Adding Catechism questions up to54! (almost there)
Science:Excellent reports on whales and dolphins....well dolphins. It brought me great joy to know the the Narwhal actually is real! I introduced the lungs and we tried our hand at a science experiment....that didn't go as planned. The bottle we too soft. T he children understand the procedure and what materials are needed, I encouraged them to give it another try at home.
Homework: Practice drawing and labeling the lung and respiratory system. Use page 79 in our Biology Lab Book to guide us. Learn about the respiratory system using other sources that they may already have as well.
Literature: Great discussion on Narnia. Thank you Jared for sharing a very insightful book!
Homework: Write an essay paper at least 5 paragraphs long. (Opening, 3 topics, Closing) Compare and contrast the creation of Narnia to God's creation of Earth. Please make sure you take some time to read through Genesis chapter 1.....if not more :) You may use the outline I gave you to help. (If you need to, start reading Number the Stars)
Geography: Addie gave an awesome presentation on Korea! The pictures were wonderful and the snack was tasty too. Next week either Hannah has a friend that may present or Jordan's grandmother may present, both of these children are to contact me with this information :)
Homework: Keep studying Asia. Practice drawing it out and labeling. Use the map I handed out in class to help with tracing. Do not forget review or Geography Terms. We are now up to plateau...that's a lot :)
Latin: We had fun with a Latin Scavenger Hunt! They had to know the word to get their next clue. It went so well, I promised to put a more complicated one together...so study that vocabulary. Also, I will post a new link tomorrow or Friday with the grammar I asked for them to work on.
Homework: Up to page 66 in your book. FINISH THOSE QUIZZES. They are open book, and bring them back to class ;) We will go over them in class together. I do not wish to move more into parsing into we have some of this grammar down. It is a lot and after praying on it, decided to give them one more week to work on it. So work on those rules for accents, macrons, and syllables, memorizing declensions endings and conjugation endings.
I do hope everyone has a healthy and happy week! Many Blessings!!

Week 2 Take 2
Yeah, we made it to week 2! It was looking like we might not LOL
Thank you for all the well wishes on my trip. I had a lovely time with my husband and whole family together for my daughter's birthday. Looking forward to getting back into the swing of things this week.
Everyone seemed to enjoy the fudge from New Orleans this week. Addie has volunteered for snack next week.
On skiing: I was going to try to go on the 26th but that is not going to work out for me. I do plan on going February 23rd. (I may go the 9th, but probably not) But here is the link for Sugar www.riderschoice.blogspot.com if you wish to go on your own. Also you will find dates for Appalachian Ski Mountain on that same page. I may do them on Valentines Day. If any of these dates interest you, let me know and maybe we can coordinate to go together. Also, if you know you are going on another date, post it here and maybe someone else would like to go with you:)
As promised....the 5th grade Bonnie Pic from Hong Kong :) Yes, I dug the 80's
And on to it:
Algebra 1: We went through 5 lessons! Yes 5! I gave them permission to do 3 lesson practices, 2 mixed practices on the condition that they take the time to memorize some of the grammar.
Homework: Up to lesson 72. Know substitution, elimination, and factoring trinomials.
Rhetoric: Another day of great discussion. I encouraged them that catechism questions are almost done.
Homework: Chapter 17 in both books. Add questions #49 - #51
Science: I think we all agreed we do not wish to meet Jared's bat from the Philippines anytime soon :) Great reports!
Homework: Whales and Dolphins! They will need their Biology books starting next week. We will start with the lungs.
Literature: Everyone kept saying what horrible papers they had and I thought quite the opposite! Learning to write an essay with your own style of writing and incorporating an opinion without using the words I or we can be a challenging task. For everyone's first time out I was impressed. This is a skill we are introducing in A and will continue to cultivate.
Homework: Read Magician's Nephew with the essay topic in mind. Take notes along the way if needed to remember parts that one may wish to use in their essay.
Geography: We reviewed everything we should be studying throughout the week. Testimony was shared on how it really only takes 15 minutes of review, 15 of new to do the job :) Set a timer. Time management is a huge skill. Learn it now and you will carry it with you for a very long time! I am in the process of looking for a better Asia map and will hopefully have one by next Tuesday. I also shared about my trip to Hong Kong. One of my CD's did not work :( But they got to see some other pictures.
Homework: Don't forget about those GEOGRAPHY TERMS!!! Continue to review 15 minutes a day and practice Asia 15 minutes a day. Next week Addie, will be doing a special presentation.
Latin: We introduced 2nd Declension Neuter, 2nd Conjugation, and some new vocabulary.
Homework: Do and BRING BACK take home/open book quiz, pages 49 - 56, practice speaking (alphabet/diphthongs) Next week oral quiz on the grammar of syllables, accents, macrons, and vocab review.

Week 1..part 2
What an awesome first day!! Well, I was thrilled anyway. While the kids were not necessarily thrilled, I do believe they enjoyed being altogether again. We enjoyed sharing a bit about our break, and how blessed we each were at Christmas time.
Two shout outs! 1-Thank you parents for timely payments today!! My directors payment to CC is due right around the corner and I very much appreciate that. 2- These kids rock when it comes to cleaning up our room!! They got right to it and knocked it out without me having to say a word!!
Business Notes: If we have any lost days due to snow, I will send out an email as soon as I know and call everyone personally. Usually, all the Westside directors will try to make the decision the night before (due to many driving long distances).
I will be sending out an email this week about ski dates. My children and I have enjoyed many nearby slopes home school ski dates at wonderful rates. This year I thought we would post the dates of when we were going and if anyone wants to join us, or would like a ride (We have 4 extra seats) they are welcome to.
Mark your calendars! February 22nd is Pancake Breakfast, YUMMM!!!! I come early and flip some flapjacks for Challenge A and B. We usually start eating around 8:30am. One word....bacon! More details to come.
And away we go!
Algebra: I believe today I became the world's most "loved" math tutor. I explained the answer to why we study Algebra. I also discussed the grammar of the math language and how we have reached the level where they just need to set aside time every day to just work on the grammar of math. Set a timer if they need to. (Consider it Algebra Memory Master:)
Homework: I am only having them do up to Lesson #67, make sure we understand the elimination method
Rhetoric: Discussion today was amazing. I was afraid with visitors coming in and out that it might disrupt the flow a bit, if anything, they seemed to shine even more. We talked about how the end to Catechism questions is in sight and will give them time to play catch up if needed.
Homework: Chapter 16 in both books and questions up to 48
Science: Great reports on marsupials! I also let them in on the fact that we will be doing science experiments to go along with the anatomy we will be learning about. There is an important decision to make....pig or shark!
Homework: Report on bats
Literature: I do not even know which adjectives to choose to describe the conversation we had on Carry On Mr Bowditch today. Everyone participated and everyone had fantastic contributions! I just kept thinking, this is how Leigh Bortins planned it to be :) We talked a bit on how to structure our paper. I gave them a few handouts that you may wish to go through with them at home. It is to be in essay form. It should contain an introductory paragraph, each paragraph is a detail, and a conclusion paragraph. The checklist needs to be attached to their essay. I realize that sometimes parents (especially when you are trying to proof 3 or more children's papers) may not always get a chance to proof. On the checklist, just do not check those boxes. The checklist is a guideline for how it should be on a week when it is flowing and all comes together. (Not the week where you may be passing around flu) The handouts I gave them today were to support good habits I hope to groom in them for their Challenge "career". How to read a book for understanding, how to structure their writing, and the writing process itself are skills they begin this semester through the literature seminar and will continue to grow in Challenge B. Oh, we also had a blast playing a new game I received for Christmas...Now What?
Homework: Contrast what Bowditch accomplished as a teen in school, work, and recreation with today's teens in those three areas.
Geography: I encouraged them to spend at least 15 minutes a day on review. Maybe picking a different region each day. We discussed the classical model as well and what it meant to study the grammar of a subject and why we study geography this way. I also encouraged them again to bring in any presentations they would like. I will be presenting on Hong Kong! (probably next week)
Homework: Review and start in on Asia. Practice drawing countries and capitals.
Latin: We tied in the same conversation we had in geography concerning grammar. This week introduces an enormous amount of grammar for Latin. (Principal parts of verbs, macrons, syllables, and accents) I encouraged them to take the time to memorize it now, then it's done. It will make it so much easier. The understanding will come.
Homework: Pages 39-48 in their LNST level 4 books.
