Week 9 already!

Where is the time going???  I am sorry Ms. Bonnie was not her most jovial self today.  I am afraid this week has very much worn on me.  Please continue to keep us in prayer during this time of saying good bye to our beloved Mary.

Lots of talking today, with something new.  I noticed a couple times where there was blatant talking while I was trying to instruct.  Bunny trails happen, but when I am talking or trying to take the lead, I need to ask that we start respecting that and not talk when "Ms. Bonnie has the floor."

Thank you Mullins for snack!! Next week, Black is up.

Math: We reviewed lessons 100 - 103 I encouraged kids (and moms, you too!) to contact if we are needing help.  We are very much into the pre-algebra part of things and the lessons this week are very important
Homework: Lessons 100 - 103

Latin: We played Latin Bingo and introduced the 3rd declension.  There was a handout for this that goes with the 1st and 2nd declension handout

Literature: We talked about creating our own outline.  That Ms. Bonnie cannot hold the hand forever, and if you fall this week, I will be there with a band aid :)  We practiced making an outline in class and discussed the book.  I also talked about starting to brainstorm for the final paper this semester.  Assignment (not due until week 14) either re-write the ending of one of our books or tell me what happens next.

Week 7

Sorry so late on blog this morning.  I am working on a music project and lost track of time :)

I believe our class consumed enough sugar yesterday to keep the candy companies in business for another year. As a result the talking was really out of control.  Quite a few TTM checks went out.  (I took one on myself)

WEEK 8 Thurmonds have snack and we also have BREAKFAST AND PJ DAY! (optional) I will be on campus by 8am-ish with chickin' mini's, doughnuts, OJ and Chocolate milk.  (I already spoke to those that carpool about saving some stuff :)  Please come early and fellowship! (FYI This is a good time to get all the talking out  LOL)

Also I want to put out there, the week of April 16th is mock trial week for Challenge B.  I would like to suggest a possible field trip or at least get the dates out to you as mom and dad, so you can take your children to go see this in action.  It is a lot of fun and one of the "big" things they will have in B next year.  More to come on this in a separate email.

Math: Lessons 92 through 95 were gone over in class.  PLEASE SPEND TIME ON 94/95.  This is our foundation for Algebra.
Homework: Work those 4 lessons

Latin: NOTE: Remember this is the skill of GRAMMAR.  We should be drilling the endings of nouns declensions, verb conjugations, and vocabulary this year.  We have 2 more years for things to click :) We reviewed verb endings, the 4 principal parts, and conjugating verbs.  We also introduced pronouns of the 1st and 2nd person.

Week 6 Already!!

In my morning devotion, God actually had me meditating on English and Latin!! If you know me, I am one to have learned the grammar, but these are not necessarily my favorites to contemplate on.  The particular Bible study I am working is going through the names of God and today it discussed Jehovah, meaning to be, to become.  It speaks to the very being and existence of God.  Which is what got me started with defining a verb.  Definition, a word that exerts action, being, or existence.  How many times do I think of God as a noun performing actions?  I seldom think on God as the action.  In Exodus 3:14, "God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM"; and He said,"Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you'" Even in Latin, the "I am" is treated differently.  It is special.  Ladies, I just wanted to remind everyone this morning that we do not just serve a God who "does" good things.......HE IS GOOD THINGS!  He sees our home schools and sees our hearts.  No matter how 2nd semester is going, let us rejoice in His goodness, in His glory.  We can rest in His unchangeableness.  He has never failed.  He will not begin to fail with me or you.  He cannot.  He is Jehovah, the self-existent, covenant keeping God!

Items of Business:
  • Next week is Valentines day, I myself plan on finding some Justin Beiber Valentines to hand out ;)  I did tell the kids, we have an unspoken class rule of no one professing their undying love for anyone except God...and maybe Ms. Bonnie.  That should take the pressure off LOL They are welcome to pass out Valentines if they wish, by no means to they even have to acknowledge it is Valentines Day.
  • Week 8 is Breakfast!! Come in early for Chicken minis (Yes mom....you can pop in too ;)
  • Week 10 Foundations is having an 80's day, no one in our class seemed interested, but they are welcome to dress 80's if they would like
  • And Week 15...it is official, we are planning the trip to Hanes Mall.  RIght now I need some volunteer drivers (this woudl be an afternoon trip 12:30 to 4pm) If you can help, please let me know.
  • Snack this week was Soots! YUM!!! I succumbed to the cupcake!  Next week...Mahoney ;)
Math: In class we had a short pop quiz on properties of math.  They can learn these now or in Algebra.  I vote now, because Algebra has plenty else to work on.  We also went over the next 4 lessons.
Homework: Lessons 88 - 91

Latin: We went down the "rabbit hole" with verbs.  I created some charts (You might recognize one of them from Foundations:) for the different conjugations.  Bring these to class.  We will be adding to these.  I know 2 did not make it home because they are in my crate :)
Homework: Lesson 10 Ex. 135 - 138, 140 - 141.  You can either study the grammar book 165, 168, 171, or Study the cards I sent home ;)  1st and 2nd conjugations endings, Present system, is what we are learning. Now next week there is A QUIZ. Originally it was just going to be on vocabulary, but since there was a lot of talking I decided to have an open book quiz for conjugating a verb as well.  If your student does not understand how to use their charts to conjugate a verb....it may be because they were not paying attention :)
Adv. Homework: Lesosn 22

Science:  We took our quiz on mouth.  We showed off our brains.  Then we learned a bit about heart health!
Homework: See guide

Geography:  We took our test on Asia! YEAH!!! It is alll downhill from here ;)
Homework: See guide.  DO NOT FORGET TERMS!

Rhetoric:  I hate putting Rhetoric last...but that was the flow of the day.  Good discussion, but short, on heaven and hell.  We started to define hell.  You may wish to review this with your child.  This is a pretty heavy concept and one I know I do not wish ot think on often.
Homework: See guide DO NOT FORGET CAT ?'s

PS I have almost finished my book LOL

Week 5 Again :)

Items of Business:

  • Thank you Shaw Family for snack....YUM!! Next week Soots :)
  • Upcoming Week 8 is Breakfast social.  Come on in as early as 8:30 for Chicken minis and fellowship.  Optional PJ Day
  • Also March 6th, Week 10, Foundations is having an 80's day.  I will leave up to the kids if they would like to participate in this one as well
  • Week 15 is end of year "party" After researching Laser Tag, this was not a cost effective option.  The kids instead have voted for a trip to Hanes Mall in Winston Salem.  I am still in need of at least one other driver that can haul 8.  (or 2 drivers with smaller cars)
  • Next week accountability sheets will be taken up.  I will be sending out individual emails again :)
  • Check out Science section for a cool "brains" experiment
  • I attached some helpful Latin sheets to your weekly email, if you cannot open them let me know
Math: We reviewed the test  (which went well) and introduced 3 lessons.
Homework: 3 lessons, the 4th day is to be used to memorize properties

Latin: We worked more with verbs and introduced new vocabulary.  We talked about conjugating, but did not go too far down that rabbit hole yet.
Homework: Pgs. 109 - 119 purple book, ex. 120, 121, 126-129, 131 (This is a lot, please decide as teacher what your student will/will not do) Blue Book rule 164.  In PDF I am having John really work on memorizing pg. 104 - 105
Advanced: REVIEW!

Literature: We had a bunch of guests and boy did our class shine!!  They did such a great job with discussing our book, our guests were enthralled!  We really delved into how today's Christians need courage to stand up for our beliefs.  Please continues these discussions with your child ;)
Homework: See guide.

Science: We tested on lungs, reviewed mouth, and made a brain :)  Well , it weighed as much and had the same consistency as a brain!  (Smelled bad too LOL)  The brain experiment I wanted to do I am inserting here.  It involves cooking, so adult supervision is needed :)
Materials:
2 cups water
2 cups flour
4 teas. cream of tartar
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 cup salt
red food coloring
Mix the water, salt, flour, and cream of tartar in a large bowl or blender until lumps disappear.  Then mix in the vegetable oil.  Put the entire mixture into a saucepan and "cook" it over low heat until it gets lumpy.  Pour the mixture out and let it cool.   Then knead and shape it into the form of a brain.  Don't forget to add wrinkles (gyri) to your brain.  Squirt in red food coloring for blood vessels.
Homework: See guide

Rhetoric: More wonderful discussion here as well.  We talked a bit about how the original Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic does not always translate word for word into English.  We also touched on how sometimes the Bible is literal and sometimes it is figurative.  Enjoy that discussion :)
Homework: see guide

Geography: We played geography games
Homework: TEST ON ASIA NEXT WEEK
