What are we doing???!?!?!

Getting out of the house??? Post in comments here and maybe some friends can join :)

Week 15!

What a wonderful day of fellowship, fun, and I am pretty sure we did get some school in there ;)  I have gotten so attached to this class, it is really going to be hard to say good bye come spring.  That being said, I announced to the class and now to you, this will be my last season of Challenge A.  It is bittersweet.  This is something I love and is so near and dear to my heart.  Getting to know your wonderful children, seeing how God creates each one of us so individually to be his hands and feet, to be a part of the process of helping these young ones see what God may have created them to grow towards, it is my honor and privilege.  This Turkey Day, I am so thankful for the gift of your children in my life. THANK YOU!

Items of Business:

  • Ice Skating Party Tuesday the 11th, see separate email for details
  • Over the break, please feel free to send me any email prayer requests, I love to pray for our group

Week 12

Whatever festivities you plan on enjoying tonight, please be safe and glorify our Father :)

Lots of fun and candy to be had yesterday, and our room was actually warm!!  We did have a few snags in the schedule.  Unfortunately my son fell ill after the CC day had started and I needed to call my mom and have her pick him up.We did end up with an extra 15 minutes for lunch.....the kids didn't complain, but wanted to let my moms know :)

I brought snack this week, and next week is officially Lindsay.

Homework: See guide

Rhetoric: We took a "scary" pop quiz on Cat questions and discussed Chapter 11.  I say this every week, but this section really is my favorite!  I really want to challenge parents and kids to find out where your bible comes from.  We use it to defend our faith and biblical view, let us be prepared to give an answer :)

Week 11

Another great week of classical!  We missed you Morgan and Caleb, get well soon!!

Use outline from Lesson 3 arrangement.  We also had some great discussion on Number the Stars....is it ever ok to lie?
Homework: See PDF guide

Rhetoric: We discussed how the stories in the bible are not just stories.  They really happened!  How sometimes we can become desensitized to stories like Daniel and the Lions den and we forget how powerful a passage that can be.  I really encourage you to continue discussion of this at home ;)

Week10

Wow! Every year seems to go faster and faster!!  I am really treasuring up all these memories on my heart.  These young boys and girls have become so precious to me, thank you for sharing :)

Save the Date!! December 11th, the 2nd Tuesday in December we will go ice skating.  I usually open this up to all Challenges.  It is very laid back and informal of a gathering.  We jsut meet at the outside skating rink in greensboro.  I collect everyones money so we get the group rate, and then we hang out ;)  Last year a group of us went to Mellow Mushroom afterwards.  I realized some may already be traveling at this point, but if it is open...SAVE THAT DATE!!

Thank you Dees for snack! I LOVE grapes!  Next week Hinson.  Week 12 is open, does anyone wish to sign up??

Algebra:  We reviewed lesson 40 - 43.  There were some glassy stares over lesson 40, please email with any questions ;)
Homework: Lessons 40 - 42....MEMORIZE THOSE EXPONENT RULES!!!!

Latin:  We reviewed the 3rd declension and practiced parsing.  I reminded them that if parsing isn't coming as easily to just keep reviewing the vocabulary and endings and it will all come.
Homework: See Guide

Lost Tools:  GREAT ESSAYS!!! I heard the bones in EVERY ONE OF THEM!!!!  (bones being the essay structure) We reviewed the 5 tools of invention and created an ANI chart for Number the Stars.  We also talked about is they are having a hard time keeping up with the reading, to use this year to work it out.  Challenge A and B, while we are not lax, do have more freedom to "work out the kinks" and see where we need to structure ourselves better.
Homework: See PDF guide (please email me is you need this again :)

Rhetoric:  Good discussion, once we got down to it.  We are learning how to have group discussion and sometimes crosstalk can overwhelm the classroom.  But once I stated this, we were able to get down to business :)  These guys are really getting it!  I cannot wait to see some of them in debate!
Homework: See guide (Don't forget those cat questions!)

Science: Remember Week 12 is the picture contest!  This weeks reports on butterflies was quite refreshing from last weeks insects :)
Homework: See guide

Geography: Small things done daily....they are going to get so sick of hearing this LOL Europe cannot be done the week before the test....they must start now.  At this point we talked about at ;east 15 min morning, 15 min afternoon, and 15 minutes REVIEW.
Homework: See guide (don't forget terms)

Week 8

More than half way through!! Wow! I have really come to just adore our class.  I cannot believe how time is flying.

PJ Day, lots of fun!

Snack Ms. Sharon cake...epic!  Snack next week is FIELDS.

CONGRATS KATYE!!!!!! She was baptized over this last weekend!!

Alright, Ms. Bonnie did have a few lectures yesterday.  I did not want anyone to walk away discouraged, but encouraged to do their best.  I know a lot of times we travel and life comes up.  But school does need to be done.  If they don't read the book, it is hard for them to participate in discussion.  If they only take 15 minutes a day to study for a big test, that is all they are going to get out of it.  I told them the problem is......I have seen their potential and what they can do and are capable of :)  So I want to encourage them to run the race of this semester, and do their best!

Math: We reviewed lessons 32 through 35.
Homework: Lessons 32 through 35

Latin: I returned Latin tests back....AWESOME JOB!!  Shout outs go to Caleb and Matthew with perfect scores including the bonus!! We delved deeper into 3rd declension and talked about gender rules.  We practiced parsing a sentence.
Homework: See guide

Lost Tools: We reviewed sorting an ANI and putting it into an outline again.  use the outline on page 18 of the student workbook.  Joey received an early Christmas present as we used his ANI chart to sort :) This was point of lecture number 1 on getting the books read.
Homework: See PDF guide

Rhetoric: GREAT Discussion!! These guys are really asking some awesome questions.  I cannot wait to see them in debate next year. Question of the week:Why would someone choose to believe something so radical as coming from primordial ooze vs. being created?
Homework: See guide.

Science:  Loved the reports and we had 2 examples! One Daddy Long Legs whose legs didn't survive the backpack :) Then the ....drum roll please....TARANTULA!  Yes, Sam's sister has a pet spider and I cannot believe I am saying this....it was kind of cute.
Homework: See guide

Geography:  This would be home of lecture #2.  While tests were not bad....I have seen what these boys can do :)  So please  BE ENCOURAGED  not discouraged.  Shout out here goes to Andrew who only needed to label 10 features to nab all the feature points, but chose to review USA and Canada and labeled 131 features!!

Week 7

Just about half way there!  WOW!

First off....PJ DAY!!!! Next week....(completely optional) is PJ day if your child is interested. Usually in Challenge A we will have 1/2 that think this is totally cool and 1/2 that do not.  So if your child wishes to, they may bring their favorite "Squishy" and just roll out of bed to come in....brush your teeth though :)

Snack this week was McClamroch...oh my that looked delicious!!  In our room, it was gone ;)  Next week....me.  Sssssshhhh, do not tell.  My son's birthday is next Tuesday and I have ordered a cake from Ms. Sharon to share with my class and his.   If you have never had a Ms. Sharon cake, well, you are missing out ;)

Algebra: We reviewed three lessons, yes just three, and that is OK.  For my type A people (I am one of you as well LOL) We have about 4 weeks at the end to play with and I really felt we need to slow down just a tad this week to study these foundation concepts.  We talked about memorizing these exponent rules, and taking time to review this quiz I gave in class to see where we may have gone wrong.  I will also be emailing some websites, later on today, to help this process of understanding. Unless you are really understanding and keeping up quite well, please do not just take the 4th day off.  It is to take time to study and let understanding grow some roots.
Homework:  Lessons 29 - 31

Latin:  we had our first official test today!  At first glance it looks like they have been working very hard ;)  We also introduced 3rd declension and our "quick noun chart" that is in their red book.  Remember, the skill we are learning here is grammar.  Memorize, memorize, memorize......this will plant roots and understanding will come.
Homework: See guide

Lost Tools:  MANY had not read the book...please make sure they have by next week so we may discuss.  We read a few papers...AWESOME.  I did collect these, but I will not be grading them.  I will not be looking for content, please remember I am looking for "bones" or the skeleton of a persuasive essay.  We reviewed our 3 cannons and 5 tools of invention.  We also focus on comparison and how to delve into that a little deeper.
Homework: Complete and ANI chart for The Magician's Nephew.  Using the  chart on page 67 of the student guide, use comparison to add to your ANI.  (Do not forget, you still have all 5 tools to use in your ANI)

Geography:  YEAH!!! One test closer to being done with geography LOL At least I know that is how some are feeling.  They did a great job testing today without talking!!!
Homework: See guide

Science: Loving the science reports!  Of course, the week before arachnids they are asking if they can bring specimens in.  Yes they can.  But when talking arachnids, can I ask that it not be alive LOL
Homework: See guide

Rhetoric:  These kids are really getting into their study of evolution, I LOVE IT!!  We had a lot of extra chatter in this hour...but I think it is because we did good all day and had held it in so long ;)  They are really growing and maturing here.  We talked about learning to listen to the Holy Spirit now and look for His guidance.  How Jesus was sometimes not nice when needed.   How we will have those times in life where we will have to be firm and times when we will need to be gentle and the Bible and Holy Spirit can guide us.We ended with candy for questions :) More next week!!
Homework: See guide.

Week 6

Rain, rain go away! Come again another day....but not Tuesday! LOL  We had some rainy day chatter, but nothing Ms. Bonnie Couldn't handle :)

Thank you Morel for snack! The cookies were a hit.  Next week McClamroch.

Saturday morning Week 6 updates will go out to everyone through email, be on the look out ;)

Oh and.....Joey is cool.

Algebra:  We reviewed Lessons 25-28.  We have a quiz next week which you will do well on if you have a good understanding of lessons 25-26.  REMEMBER, we home school.  Work at your pace.
Homework: Lessons 25-28

Latin: Test next week!!! What you need to know: Declension endings for 1st, 2nd, 2nd Neuter.  There are 8 vocabulary words, one word to decline 1st declension, 3 fill in the blanks for rules (boxes in purple book), and 2 very easy sentences to parse.  FYI I always include bonus points that everyone can get :)
Homework: See guide and study!

Lost Tools:  I reviewed with everyone where to find the guide for Lost Tools.  If you need the PDF file again, please let me know.  This week our elocution lesson is actually found in Chapter 3, vague verbs.  For those coming out of IEW, this somewhat similar (alliteration LOL) to strong verbs and not using those banned words.  We also finished our discussion on Bowditch and talked a lot of respect.
Homework:See guide.  DON'T FORGET TO READ THE NEXT BOOK!! Magician's Nephew

Rhetoric: Well, we went down some bunny trails this week.  Very good conversation.  I do believe some of the best we have had this year.  These guys are really starting to contemplate why we are learning about Evolution and how we can use this information to own our own beliefs and argue them well.
Homework: See guide. Remember, catechism questions are worth candy next week! (Ian I will save you some)

Science: Another great week of reports.
Homework: See guide

Geography:  I handed back tests and all I can say was how proud I was of EVERYONE!!  They did such a good job rising even more to the challenge.  We even has our first perfect score!!  GREAT JOB EVERYONE!

Maps for Week 5

These are in Black and White but maybe you can print them from here to help out this week :)

Week 5

Another wonderful week! I do hope everyone is taking advantage of the awesome weather this week.  There is no rule that says Latin cannot be studied outside :)

I do have someones lunch box.

After week 6 semester updates will go out, be on the look out for these in your email box.

Thank you Morgan for an awesome snack and sharing your BIRTHDAY with us :)  It was our honor and joy to celebrate with you.Next week is Morel.

Homework: Lessons 21 - 24

Latin: We had a pop quiz for 1st declension endings :)  We practiced vocabulary and introduced indirect objects.  we expressed the importance of learning the grammar, even if the understanding is not there yet.  The understanding will come.
Homework: see guide

Lost Tools: we looked at our ANI charts and learned how to sort and put into an outline for an introductory persuasive essay.  The student guide takes you through this process step by step.  If you have any questions, please ask :)
Homework: See PDF guide.  They also need to contemplate on youth back then versus youth of today.

Geography:  I was so excited to see the progress from USA to Canada.....WOW!!!  I cannot wait to tally up points!!!!  We looked at Central America and Antilles and I will send out a map in our email to help :)
Homework: See guide

Science: Another great week of reports.  We have some very talented artists in our class.
Homework: See guide

Rhetoric: It was such a nice day, we had our discussion outside.  We discussed both chapters and in the end we got into why are we learning this?  Why would we need to know what the uninformative believes? Why do we believe in Jesus?  I challenged them to be prepared to give an answer that is not, "because that is what my mom believes."
Homework: See guide

Week 4

Yet another wonderful day! I can tell we are getting more comfortable with each other and we shall see that reflected in a seating chart for next week :)

Snack this week was Willis....BIG HIT! Who doesn't love cake?  Thank you very much :)  Next week McClamroch.

Algebra: We reviewed 4 new lessons.  Everyone seems to be grasping the concepts.  Please encourage your student to ask questions if they need to.  This can be during class, or by email or text :)
Homework: lessons 17 - 20

Latin: I think we are really understanding how nouns work.  We reviewed how to decline and why we decline.  We also did some light parsing.  We talked about how important it is to be able to label a sentence in English so we can translate it.  MOMS AND DADS, I really wish to encourage you here.  I understand Latin can be one of those Skills that is hard to understand at first.  Let us remember as we learn any new subject we start with the grammar.  The grammar here would be just memorizing  declension endings, cases, and vocabulary.  Understanding WILL COME with time and practice.  If you are struggling, let me encourage you to attend class yourself or give me a call, I am more than happy to help.
Homework: See guide

Lost Tools: Excellent job on the essays! I know they are glad that one is done! A few children mentioned having not finished Carry On Mr. Bowditch.  Please make sure they do so by next week so they can be a part of discussion.  In class we created a new ANI chart asking: Should Mr. Bowditch should stay in the care of his master he was indentured to?  I introduced the 5 Topics of Invention. These can be used to create questions that helps us delve deeper into our ANI charts.  They can be found on pgs. 11 - 12 in the Student Book.
Homework: See PDF Guide

Rhetoric:  We talked of how unique our Earth is and how God has it all under control.  We talked about how we pray to God.  How we do not want to treat God as a vending machine, trying to get only what we want.
Homework: See guide

Science: Excellent reports on wildflowers.
Homework: Herbs! I did tell students if they wish to bring a sample of the herb or something "baked" with the herbs in it, they can.  But it is certainly not required.

Geography:  The tests are back! Overall FANTASTIC WORK!!! The first test is always the hardest in that sometimes we are not sure what the expectations are.  We played an exciting round of Who Wants to be a Hypothetical Millionaire!  They did great with that too.
Homework: See guide.

Week 3...or 1/5 of the semester gone!

Time is flying already!  With their first test under their belt, I know these guys feel like seasoned Challenge professionals :)

Snack was Lovern..THANK YOU!! I LOVE Moravian Cookies :)  Next up is Willis.

Away we go....

Algebra: We reviewed the next four lessons.  Everyone seemed to be getting it or close enough that they could play around with it this week and understand :) If this is not the case, please feel free to email, txt, or call....I love to help!
Homework: Lessons 13 - 16

Latin:  I was thrilled to see these guys understand declining!! Keep up the hard work.  We talked about some possible ways to set up our vocabulary cards.  We started to get into parsing and reviewed the accusative and genitive cases.
Homework: See guide.  (start memorizing those vocabulary words, cases, and 1st declension endings...never know when a pop quiz might show up)

Lost Tools: We reviewed how to write our Rudimentary Persuasive Essay from our Outline.  THIS WILL BE THE MOST BORING PAPER THEY HAVE EVER WRITTEN.  We are stripping away the fanciness in order to make sure they have the structure down pat.  We continued to discuss The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.  We delved into questions such as......Should Edmund have lied when he came out of the wardrobe?  Should the kids have trusted the Beavers?  Should Aslan have forgiven Edmund?  Should Peter have forgiven Edmund? GOOD STUFF!
Homework: Write our essay AND read Carry On Mr. Bowditch.

Geography: We had our test after lunch.  I could have kicked myself....I forgot the geo terms sheet!   I will have a copy for everyone with their score sheets so they can see what it is like.  I know everyone is glad it is done, but must remember review!
Homework: See guide.

Science: Great report on fungi! I would like to thank everyone for not being in samples this time around :)
Homework: See guide

Rhetoric:  More great discussion! These are my science guys I can tell :)  We started in on how unique a planet Earth is.  We also discussed having a personal relationship with Jesus and how it can affect a persons life one way or the other.  We talked about what we could do as a 7th grade student to encourage someone into a personal relationship.  We also discussed.......is God a man or a woman?  OK, here is what I shared: the Bible refers to God in the masculine.  Both men and women are made in His image.  This is not a mirror image. Woman carry characters of God as well as men.  We were meant to complement each other.  The Bible states 2 shall become one.  This was met with some giggles :)  You may wish to go deeper with this in your own school, you may wish to leave it at that.

ENJOY THIS BEAUTIFUL WEATHER!!!! GOD BLESS!

Week 2

Wow time is flying already!  It has been so much fun starting the process of getting to know each other.  Even the kids who I had tutored years ago, how neat to see how they are growing in Christ and really digging in to focus on Him.  JOY!

Next week snack is Lovern.  Remember everyone, snack should not be a stressful point of the week.  Keep it simple.  If your child needs more, they can bring more and snack throughout the day.  Just please be respectful and not have something like carrots during Latin. :)

Next weeks afternoon schedule will go as follows: Geography, Rhetoric, then Science.  I do not feel it is kind to give a test in that 3pm hour. :)

Algebra: We reviewed lessons 9 - 12.  Everyone seems to be catching on, we are still in review.  Please contact me if anything is fuzzy.  More than happy to help.
Homework: Lessons 9 - 12

Latin: We learned how to decline nouns and reviewed what nouns are and how they can be used.  I challenged them to be memorizing their 5 cases and 1st declension endings.  They should also be putting their vocabulary words on to flashcards.  One students had a great idea of writing the word declined.  That helps with learning the endings as well!
Homework: See guide.

LTW: The more I work with this curriculum, the more I love it.  We went over how to take our ANI chart and make it an outline using the sheets in our student notebook.  I reminded them that this first paper will be the most boring paper they have ever written.  The second half of class we started to discuss the book itself using our ANI charts to ask questions along the way.  Questions like: Should Lucy have been in the wardrobe?  Should Lucy's siblings have believed her?  Should Edmund have followed the White Witch?  We touched on the things that can tempt us in life and how Christ was tempted with these things as well.  You may wish to continue this conversation at home. :)
Homework: See PDF guide.

Rhetoric: We officially started our journey this week and started to discuss just how vast the universe is.  How it would be arrogant of us to assume there is no God just because we do not see Him in our "space".  And how we DO see Him in our "space".  We talked how Satan is a Lion waiting to devour us and why we have rules.  That these rules actually set us free in God.  Lots of great discussion here to have with your kids! We also learned we have a baptism coming up this weekend....CONGRATS KATYE!!!!
Homework: See guide.

Science: We read our first science reports and to the ladies dismay they realized most of our research in science may be a bit gross. :)  But reports were excellent!! Remember, they need to have a bibliography with each paragraph.  This is an important skill.
Homework: See guide.

Geography: We saw the competitive side come out of many of our students.  We did have to take a pause and discuss Christlike competition. :)  But after the talk these guys gained perspective and did just fine.
Homework: STUDY!!! see guide. test next week.

Week 1

What a most excellent day!!! It is always a treasure to see God at work and how He weaves these classes together in His perfect and glorious way!

This First week is a bit like Kindergarten all over again.  We are getting to know each and learning what new freedoms we have and do not have.  Manny we missed you and cannot wait for you to come to class :)

If anyone has any questions that come up, or just need to talk, please call, email, or txt.

Algebra: In class we reviewed lessons 5 through 8.  I emphasized memorizing rules and formulas now instead of later.....IT WILL MAKE THINGS EASIER :)
Homework: Lessons 5 through 8

Latin: We introduced nouns and declension endings by working on our English.  I had to laugh when I went blank on direct object versus indirect object.  But I had Lee to help me out so all was good.
Homework: See guide

Lost Tools: In class we talked about invention, arrangement, and elocution.  We created our own ANI chart asking "Whether Mr. Tumnus should have turned Lucy in to the White Witch?".  We talked about how to use questions.
Homework: See PDF guide.(if you could not open, email me)  Bring their personal ANI chart to class next week.

Rhetoric: This week we started to get to know each other.  I loved that everyone felt comfortable to talk and share a bit about themselves.  I shared what is expected each week and how to use the Rhetoric Journals I handed out at orientation.  Make sure they have them next week. Start now on Catechism Questions.
Homework: See guide.

Science: We discussed how to do research.  While an occasional internet site is acceptable (NO WIKI), I encouraged them to find other sources.  Children's book are great for this strand, along with encyclopedias.  The children need at least 2 sources.  They can be a general or specific as they like.   I require a picture (not printed, hand drawn), one paragraph, and a bibliography. I provided some tools to help them with their bibliography and taking notes.  If they are researching something that really excites them and they want to do more, PLEASE feel free to go ahead.
Homework: See guide

Geography:  Well.......I am not sure they realized exactly what geography would look like.  They sure do now :)  We talked about our guide, the notebook and Atlas are all resources.  I stressed in detail SMALL THINGS DONE DAILY.  One more time, SMALL THINGS DONE DAILY.  Set a timer for 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes in the afternoon.  You cannot wait until 2 days before to start.  Practice drawing and then practice again.  Start with one section then move to another, do not try to tackle all at once.  We will have a matching test on the terms with each test, so make sure they are not forgetting those.

2 weeks left!!! WOW!!

Snack this week was Mahoney...I thank myself ;P  Yes, we ate sea foam green cookies :)Next up Harrell!!

Make sure you send a permission slip back with your child for our Week 15 field trip.  They will also need money for lunch.  If this is an issue, please just fill me in and I can help :)

Next week dissection!!

Mark your calendars...APRIL 16th in Oak Ridge is Mock Trial.  I highly encourage everyone who can to make it.  It REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY helps to see it first hand :) Speaking of making the transition to Challenge B a couple notes:

  • These last 2 weeks are actually designed to help pave a way for what is going on in Challenge B.  Our topics for final rhetoric paper mimic debate.  Our Literature paper mimics Short Story.  THe fact that we are doing all this writing at one time will be status quo for B.
  • This summer it would help to read over your Newberry books.
  • Also, keep up with the guide.  If you pace yourself as the guide suggests, you will be just fine.  If you get behind........it is hard to catch up.  In Casey's words, "Don't procrastinate".  There are many projects that take several weeks to complete.
Math: I introduced Lessons 116 - 119
Homework: Those lessons

Latin: We reviewed, reviewed, reviewed and then reviewed.
Homework for both: Review, review, review, and then review.  FINAL NEXT WEEK (Scroll below if you forget what is on the final)

Rhetoric.  We finished up Don't Check Your Brains.  I handed out the official requirements for final paper.  This is due week 15.

Week 12

Yes! Week 12!! Can you believe we are 3 weeks away??? Moms and Dads....I am so proud of you!! This first year of Challenge for any child can be overwhelming, even if you have done it before.  But I have watched all of you step up to the plate this year and all pitch in for a successful school year. KUDOS TO YOU!!!!!

Permission slips went home this week.  They need to come back with your signature that we have permission to transport your child by car.  Also, they need to be circled at the bottom.  Without an adult means a group of three or more with a cell phone on them with my number in it and their number in mine. This will be on Week 15.

Week 14 is dissection!! I noticed our guides do not include that anymore :( But I am "old school", so we will be having dissection.  If your child does not wish to participate, they will not be made to.  But I need to hear from you they are allowed to opt out.(within this week, Sharks will be ordered next week)

Week 9 already!

Where is the time going???  I am sorry Ms. Bonnie was not her most jovial self today.  I am afraid this week has very much worn on me.  Please continue to keep us in prayer during this time of saying good bye to our beloved Mary.

Lots of talking today, with something new.  I noticed a couple times where there was blatant talking while I was trying to instruct.  Bunny trails happen, but when I am talking or trying to take the lead, I need to ask that we start respecting that and not talk when "Ms. Bonnie has the floor."

Thank you Mullins for snack!! Next week, Black is up.

Week 7

Sorry so late on blog this morning.  I am working on a music project and lost track of time :)

I believe our class consumed enough sugar yesterday to keep the candy companies in business for another year. As a result the talking was really out of control.  Quite a few TTM checks went out.  (I took one on myself)

WEEK 8 Thurmonds have snack and we also have BREAKFAST AND PJ DAY! (optional) I will be on campus by 8am-ish with chickin' mini's, doughnuts, OJ and Chocolate milk.  (I already spoke to those that carpool about saving some stuff :)  Please come early and fellowship! (FYI This is a good time to get all the talking out  LOL)

Also I want to put out there, the week of April 16th is mock trial week for Challenge B.  I would like to suggest a possible field trip or at least get the dates out to you as mom and dad, so you can take your children to go see this in action.  It is a lot of fun and one of the "big" things they will have in B next year.  More to come on this in a separate email.

Math: Lessons 92 through 95 were gone over in class.  PLEASE SPEND TIME ON 94/95.  This is our foundation for Algebra.
Homework: Work those 4 lessons

Week 6 Already!!

In my morning devotion, God actually had me meditating on English and Latin!! If you know me, I am one to have learned the grammar, but these are not necessarily my favorites to contemplate on.  The particular Bible study I am working is going through the names of God and today it discussed Jehovah, meaning to be, to become.  It speaks to the very being and existence of God.  Which is what got me started with defining a verb.  Definition, a word that exerts action, being, or existence.  How many times do I think of God as a noun performing actions?  I seldom think on God as the action.  In Exodus 3:14, "God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM"; and He said,"Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you'" Even in Latin, the "I am" is treated differently.  It is special.  Ladies, I just wanted to remind everyone this morning that we do not just serve a God who "does" good things.......HE IS GOOD THINGS!  He sees our home schools and sees our hearts.  No matter how 2nd semester is going, let us rejoice in His goodness, in His glory.  We can rest in His unchangeableness.  He has never failed.  He will not begin to fail with me or you.  He cannot.  He is Jehovah, the self-existent, covenant keeping God!

Items of Business:
  • Next week is Valentines day, I myself plan on finding some Justin Beiber Valentines to hand out ;)  I did tell the kids, we have an unspoken class rule of no one professing their undying love for anyone except God...and maybe Ms. Bonnie.  That should take the pressure off LOL They are welcome to pass out Valentines if they wish, by no means to they even have to acknowledge it is Valentines Day.
  • Week 8 is Breakfast!! Come in early for Chicken minis (Yes mom....you can pop in too ;)
  • Week 10 Foundations is having an 80's day, no one in our class seemed interested, but they are welcome to dress 80's if they would like
  • And Week 15...it is official, we are planning the trip to Hanes Mall.  RIght now I need some volunteer drivers (this woudl be an afternoon trip 12:30 to 4pm) If you can help, please let me know.
  • Snack this week was Soots! YUM!!! I succumbed to the cupcake!  Next week...Mahoney ;)
Math: In class we had a short pop quiz on properties of math.  They can learn these now or in Algebra.  I vote now, because Algebra has plenty else to work on.  We also went over the next 4 lessons.
Homework: Lessons 88 - 91

Latin: We went down the "rabbit hole" with verbs.  I created some charts (You might recognize one of them from Foundations:) for the different conjugations.  Bring these to class.  We will be adding to these.  I know 2 did not make it home because they are in my crate :)
Homework: Lesson 10 Ex. 135 - 138, 140 - 141.  You can either study the grammar book 165, 168, 171, or Study the cards I sent home ;)  1st and 2nd conjugations endings, Present system, is what we are learning. Now next week there is A QUIZ. Originally it was just going to be on vocabulary, but since there was a lot of talking I decided to have an open book quiz for conjugating a verb as well.  If your student does not understand how to use their charts to conjugate a verb....it may be because they were not paying attention :)
Adv. Homework: Lesosn 22

Science:  We took our quiz on mouth.  We showed off our brains.  Then we learned a bit about heart health!
Homework: See guide

Geography:  We took our test on Asia! YEAH!!! It is alll downhill from here ;)
Homework: See guide.  DO NOT FORGET TERMS!

Rhetoric:  I hate putting Rhetoric last...but that was the flow of the day.  Good discussion, but short, on heaven and hell.  We started to define hell.  You may wish to review this with your child.  This is a pretty heavy concept and one I know I do not wish ot think on often.
Homework: See guide DO NOT FORGET CAT ?'s

PS I have almost finished my book LOL

Week 5 Again :)

Items of Business:

  • Thank you Shaw Family for snack....YUM!! Next week Soots :)
  • Upcoming Week 8 is Breakfast social.  Come on in as early as 8:30 for Chicken minis and fellowship.  Optional PJ Day

  • Week 15 is end of year "party" After researching Laser Tag, this was not a cost effective option.  The kids instead have voted for a trip to Hanes Mall in Winston Salem.  I am still in need of at least one other driver that can haul 8.  (or 2 drivers with smaller cars)
  • Next week accountability sheets will be taken up.  I will be sending out individual emails again :)
  • Check out Science section for a cool "brains" experiment
  • I attached some helpful Latin sheets to your weekly email, if you cannot open them let me know
Math: We reviewed the test  (which went well) and introduced 3 lessons.
Homework: 3 lessons, the 4th day is to be used to memorize properties

Latin: We worked more with verbs and introduced new vocabulary.  We talked about conjugating, but did not go too far down that rabbit hole yet.
Homework: Pgs. 109 - 119 purple book, ex. 120, 121, 126-129, 131 (This is a lot, please decide as teacher what your student will/will not do) Blue Book rule 164.  In PDF I am having John really work on memorizing pg. 104 - 105
Advanced: REVIEW!

Literature: We had a bunch of guests and boy did our class shine!!  They did such a great job with discussing our book, our guests were enthralled!  We really delved into how today's Christians need courage to stand up for our beliefs.  Please continues these discussions with your child ;)
Homework: See guide.

Science: We tested on lungs, reviewed mouth, and made a brain :)  Well , it weighed as much and had the same consistency as a brain!  (Smelled bad too LOL)  The brain experiment I wanted to do I am inserting here.  It involves cooking, so adult supervision is needed :)
Materials:
2 cups water
2 cups flour
4 teas. cream of tartar
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 cup salt
red food coloring
Mix the water, salt, flour, and cream of tartar in a large bowl or blender until lumps disappear.  Then mix in the vegetable oil.  Put the entire mixture into a saucepan and "cook" it over low heat until it gets lumpy.  Pour the mixture out and let it cool.   Then knead and shape it into the form of a brain.  Don't forget to add wrinkles (gyri) to your brain.  Squirt in red food coloring for blood vessels.
Homework: See guide

Rhetoric: More wonderful discussion here as well.  We talked a bit about how the original Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic does not always translate word for word into English.  We also touched on how sometimes the Bible is literal and sometimes it is figurative.  Enjoy that discussion :)
Homework: see guide

Geography: We played geography games
Homework: TEST ON ASIA NEXT WEEK

Week 1 Take 2!

Spectacular!!! That is how today went.  The kids responded very well to our new "TTM" protocol.  Stellar!!! I could not have asked them to do any better :)

I did let the kids know there will be a major change to our blog.  From here on out I will not be posting every single item from the guide.  Some guidelines have been sent out from Classical Conversations and I feel it only right to honor them.  Therefore, if our homework is going exactly by the guide, it will simply state, see guide.

Snack this week was tasty...thank you John Mahoney ;)  (He mixed it all himself)  Next week snack is Varnell.

And away we go:

Math: We covered the next four lessons, and everyone seemed to comprehend and have kept up on break quite well.  Great job guys!
Homework: See guide

Latin: We reviewed nouns and how to decline an adjective.  We also played Latin Bingo!
Homework: Lesson 7, Review Review, and Review.
Accel. Homework: Lessons 15 and 16 are up to bat.  If we got behind over the break, try to play a little catch up now :)

Literature: Here is where the day became fun :)  We learned that our discussion on our book, may not necessarily be about our book!  This is now a subject in which we can practice our dialectic skills.  Some great questions arose and were discussed.  Topics covered: How does our perspective change how we handle and respond to life issues.  I shared a bit of my testimony here of how my view was before Christ and after.  Should the man look after a woman?  What is the definition of look after?  Is it ok for woman to work?  Please continue these discussion with your children at home.  They need to hear your perspective and guidance :) I also handed out a checksheet for our essay and a sample outline.
Homework: See guide.  On checksheet, 100 words per paragraph is optional, 5 sentence openers is optional, but someone must proof read and sign off on.

Rhetoric: More great discussion!!! I did recommend if they have not seen The Passion of the Christ yet and you feel they are ready to check that one out.  We sit in class and talk about how gruesome and bloody the death of Christ was, and this is one of those movies that really brings it home as to what our Savior said yes to.
Homework: See guide (DO NOT FORGET TO STUDY QUESTIONS!)

Science: Excellent reports on marsupials!

Geography: We introduced Asia...YEAH! Test will be on week 6.  We also talked about visitors to come in....MORE THAN WELCOME, have them contact me to arrange.  Then we played a game with Geography Terms.
Homework: See guide.  DON'T FORGET TERMS:)
